What is Flipgrid?

Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create “grids” of short discussion-style questions that students respond to through recorded videos. Each grid is effectively a message board where teachers can pose a question and their students can post 90-second video responses that appear in a tiled “grid” display. Grids can be classes, sections, groups of students, research groups, faculty groups, or any collection of users interested in a common strand of questions. Each grid can hold an unlimited number of questions, and each question can hold an unlimited number of responses. Questions are short, text-based prompts (think Twitter) that can include basic formatting (such as bold, italic) and links to websites or documents. -Common Sense Media

What is the value of Flipgrid?

Flipgrid’s teacher tools are stellar: Take a spin through the videos to get a sense of smart ways to use it with your students. The range of tips is astonishing; who would have thought you could use a tool like this in a physical education class? If all of your students have access to a device with a camera, this can be a great way to gather students’ responses at their own pace without kids feeling on-the-spot in the classroom.

Use Flipgrid to further classroom conversations by assigning questions as homework assignments and then continue the conversation in class the next day. Ask students to weigh in on a critical current event for a social studies or civics class; use it in a math class to ask students to describe the process they used to solve a complex problem. You might also use Flipgrid as an opportunity for students to post mini-reviews of books, movies, or television shows. Consider using a “grid” as a way to collect a range of students’ responses on a single topic: Perhaps ask students at the end of a unit or the end of a year to reflect on what they’ve learned and what they’d recommend to other students. – Common Sense Media

What is Nearpod?

Nearpod is the go-to tool for interactive presentations and assessments. At the Nearpod website, teachers create their own multimedia presentations or use an extensive and growing library of pre-made offerings (many CCSS-aligned and some at a cost). Teachers can create from scratch or drag and drop files to modify. They can upload videos, images, audio clips, and PDF files and can embed multiple-choice quizzes, slide shows, polls, Draw Its (students write directly on a slide), collaboration boards, and open-ended questions. Teachers launch the presentation and monitor progress either from the website or through the app. Using the Nearpod app on their devices, students input their names to access the content and submit responses.  – Common Sense Media

What is the value of Nearpod?

The presentations provide opportunities for skill development across the curriculum and multiple ways to improve student learning. As an assessment tool, Nearpod provides immediate feedback and opportunities for re-teaching. When students receive quiz scores, they can ask questions to clarify errors in their understanding of the content instead of waiting for a paper copy to be handed back. As a presentation tool, students move through content at their own pace, which allows for differentiation. Teachers may also choose to provide students with different presentations to further personalize instruction. Using it as an engaging interactive tool, students complete polls or post ideas and images to a collaboration board, and results are immediately available for classroom discussion and up-voting. Using it as a homework tool, students can access the assignment outside of the classroom on their own device using the free app or the website. They respond to open-ended questions that the teacher can review online and use to prepare follow-up lessons based on areas of need. Finally, teachers can use it as an instructional tool, projecting student work for the class to discuss, review, or evaluate individual responses.

When direct instruction is a necessity, Nearpod offers a fantastic way to increase student involvement. It would be nice to see some additional collaborative features like a back channel or group annotation capabilities. It would be great if students could create presentations as well. – Common Sense Media
